Capacity Development Programme for B.Ed. (Honours) in Primary Education Students
The Faculty of Education, University of Colombo, conducted a Capacity Development Programme for first-, second-, and third-year students of the Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Primary Education Programme.
The programme was designed to strengthen the professional competencies of prospective primary teachers by providing practical exposure to creative approaches that can be integrated into primary classroom teaching. Particular attention was given to the use of voice, music, movement, drama, and creative expression to create engaging, learner-centred, and developmentally appropriate learning experiences for young children.
Through practical and interactive sessions, students explored a range of creative activities that can support children’s participation, communication, imagination, emotional expression, and engagement in learning. The programme also encouraged students to consider how these approaches can be incorporated into lesson planning and classroom activities to make the teaching-learning process more engaging and meaningful.
The programme was facilitated by Mr. D. M. D. Rangana and Ms. L. M. Madivila, who brought their academic and professional expertise to the programme, with a focus on drama, creative movement, music, and creative expression.
The programme provided students with opportunities to develop practical skills and confidence in using creative techniques as pedagogical tools, while encouraging them to explore innovative approaches to teaching and learning in primary education.
